Blindsided by Monavie
We were invited over for dinner tonight by some "friends" who live in Brentwood who we have hung out with a few times. When we got there we found cold appetizers and a bunch of people we didn't know. After about 15 minutes the host grabbed my arm and told me to sit down at a table with everyone. When I sat down I saw that there was a computer attached to a projector. I figured they were going to make us all watch some home video of a vacation or something. Then a lady in a suit stood up and said "For the rest of this evening I am going to talk to you about..." and I knew I was in trouble. For the next 45 minutes she talked about a juice that can cure cancer, make you lose weight, improve your skin, and... MAKE YOU WEALTHY!
I couldn't believe that I was tricked into a presentation on a pyramid scheme ("MLM", multi-level marketing is the preferred term nowadays). The lady kept talking about how "scientists" have proven that it works and she was always very mystified and impressed by anything "scientific". She kept referring to "friends" of hers that had tumors shrink and wrinkles disappear.
Halfway through Samantha and I were trying to make a graceful exit. Part of me wanted to shout out something rude and leave but I didn't want to reduce myself to their level. I was actually most angry about the fact that I brought over a bottle of wine and some of my homemade beer and I was leaving that behind for those people.
Another thing, out of the audience of 15 or so people I think 80% of them were already part of the scam. They already drink the product and knew the presentation.
They made us all taste it and it was pretty revolting. It was full of shrimp shells which made it gritty and fishy.
Basically, you are supposed to be amazed by how great the wonder tonic is and then you find out it's expensive (they sell it in a wine bottle to make it seem worth the cost). You can't just buy a bottle, you have to get a year's subscription for $130/month. However, if you convince two suckers to sign up for that deal you get your juice for free!
I'm just amazed that people can still be suckered into pyramid schemes and miracle tonics after all these decades (for the former) and centuries (for the latter) of proven frauds.
Oh well, now I know who my true friends are.
UPDATE 4/7: This is great! When I do any google searches for "Monavie Scams" all the websites are owned by people affiliated with selling Monavie so I knew they are actively patrolling the internet to suppress any negative information about the product. So, I had a good feeling that after posting on my blog (which is immediately indexed by google who owns blogger) that I might be contacted by Monavie cronies. I didn't think it would happen within 30 minutes of posting! The guy assumes I won't approve the comment but I definitely will. Please let the freaks come out of the shadows and "endorse" their product! He claims I'm being paid by "Smorty". I would like to imagine that is some sort of villain from an Indiana Jones movie but I think he's talking about an advertising agency. Anyways, everything I said happened did happen, I'm not affiliated with any advertising agencies or juice freaks.
Also, he says I'm lying about the shrimp shells but I had the "Active" version of the drink which has glucosamine which is derived from shrimp shells.
Regarding the pricing, I might be wrong on the details, I left before the presentation was over because it would be insanity to stay any longer. I do know that it costs about $130/case (only 4 bottles to a case). Who cares though, it's a pyramid scheme. Just because Donald Trump (which the commenter seems excited about) is associated with it doesn't mean I think it's legitimate. Donald is also involved in endorsing professional wrestling.
Please, let the crazy comments continue!
UPDATE 4/14: I'd like to thank "Linley" for having the courage to leave a comment after experiencing the dark side of the MLM Mafia. It goes to show how desperate and psychotic people can get when they try to rope victims into these scams.
I'd also like to warn everybody of a growing trend I'm seeing, MLM over the Internet. It makes sense from their perspective, they want to grow their pyramid as fast as possible and the Internet provides them with a way to make virtual "friends" very quickly as opposed to driving around and staging fake dinner parties. I'm seeing this happen a lot on social sites like MySpace. Be careful about people online trying to approach you with any offers (that should go without saying). I've seen MySpace MLMers actually use viruses to take over your MySpace account and make it appear that you are asking your friends to join the MLM program when you actually have no knowledge of it. People are used to seeing spam in their email but have a higher level of trust of MySpace (for some reason).

I can only assume (from a quick glance at the rest of your blog) that the reasoning behind this post is, well. You're getting paid for posting reviews, and you were asked to write a negative piece on MonaVie. Right?
Addressing your "experience", point by point:

Again, completely false. Distributors retail on a per-bottle basis regularly. We also often simply give a bottle to those we feel it would benefit. I'm assuming this was another key point the company who paid you for writing this wanted in there.

Thank you for blogging about the lowlife scum who trick you into a social gathering just to try and sell you a business scheme. Seriously. The people who do this VERY quickly lose all their real friends and within a couple months they take a look around and realize they ONLY hang out with other suckers from their MLM fraud patrol.
I like to think I am a pretty hard sell, logical and skeptical when needed.
Nonetheless, I got roped into the YTN pyramid by a nextdoor neighbor who wore me down after 6 months and finally promised to build my team FOR me. I would have supposedly recouped all my investment and never had to pay the monthly fees. Needless to say, she and her family actually moved in the middle of the night to the other side of the country. They left dozen in our uppder class neighborhood behind in the same situation as me. Was it really worth the $50 they got for duping each of us? Freaks.
I'm ok with businesses like Pampered Chef and Tupperware, but these MonaVie zombies are pathetic. It's a non-proven snake oil cure. Does it work for some people? Maybe. Everyone? Of course not. No remedy in the world is one size fits all.

I totally understand that there's a type of product that needs the MLM format. Most of the things sold through network marketing would get lost on the shelf of a retail store (that is after they paid the slotting fees) and really benefit from sitting down and listening to the proper way to use it.
Some of the time what's being sold really is fantastic. And sometimes people really DO make a lot of money off of selling good products to people that need them.
Here's where the catch is -- people don't like to be tricked into watching a presentation on the next best thing. If you totally believe in what you're selling, than be up front about it. Don't make your friends feel that you are inviting them over for a surprise bday party or a casual get together. Just TELL THEM. I bet that more than half of the time your true friends will come to support you anyways!

Well I just started in this Monavie business and I have seen some of my friends that have been doing this for a couple of months actually make money, there is NO pyramid scheme, trust me on that, everyone has equal opportunity in this business. It also isnt even about the wealth, business part, it is about the health of one another My friend has Thyroid conditions and she started drinking this Product and it has helped tremendously. Also I myself have been drinking this product and have experiance better sleep and more energy during the day. That is to bad you have to write negative articles about such a wonderful product. Bye bye.
And by the way for the people that are saying its a "cure" NO ONE has said Monavie is a cure it HELPS with your problems to make them less harmful a study showed Monavie killed up to 86% of lukemia cancer cells. This is a healthier way of going about your life instead of popping pills etc. It is also the best way to have your servings of fruit which face is we're in America and hardly anyone sticks to buying fruits to eat everyday this is a great and easy way to do that.

My landlord conned me (and my suspicious girlfriend - she's like - so smart) to come up for a "discussion meeting" with 6 other people one night. I thought, "Sure, we'll discuss trends of the day and I'll impress his friends with my knowledge of camelia sinensis."
It luckily didn't turn out to be a Monavie powerpoint presentation. It was a "discussion group" with nothing but people from his church. We watched a DVD regarding someone's opinion of hell - with plenty-o bible verse included. Ugg. SUCKER was written across my forehead as my girlfriend gave me a smirk. That night everything went real slo-mo. Could have used an ice cold igloo of Monavie dumped on me.
Well I'm glad I didn't bring along a batch of my latest barleywine. Next time you'll leave the beer gift in the car til you see that everything's cool with the soiree. "I'll be right back, got somethin' for ya in the car..."
"Because of Monavie my mother got rid of her arthritis. Her broken pelvis healed! I don't have headaches anymore." And my wallet is lighter!
Anecdotes. Our fine government allows you to pretty much say anything as long as you aren't making a health claim on your product du jur. At least if it isn't written on the bottle. But listen to your Monavie "distributor/soon-to-be-ex-friend", and you'll hear a host of amazing health claims. This isn't new. People have been hawking health drinks & elixers since the dawn of health conscious man. Don't have the exact date.
Acai, pomegranate, orange, pineapple, grape - I love to drink fruit juices. But hey, come on - one drink to solve your woes? Get smart - exercise (an hour a day) and eat and drink a VARIETY of healthy things.
The people making the money are the ones behind the marketing of Monavie. The man who started Monavie used to work at another magic-health-drink company. He's brilliant in making you autopay your $$$ every month to get that lower price. Now you must sell that juice to people to get your money back. "My friends aren't buying, but the juice keeps coming. And my credit card balance keeps going higher...better apply for a new credit card."
If it really is a worthwhile product, put it on store shelves and see what happens.

Hello Blue diamond, I would have to agree with you on that one.. Ive been in a lot of pyramids, network marketing you name it never worked for me..Ten years later I'm still poor. I did learn about how we think. How you will always stay poor if you keep thinking the way you think. you will only be financially free when you are opened to making more then you are and make mistakes to succeed in life. And most importantly do not give up.. Mona vie has helped me in so many ways if only one new me here. have been dealing with depression for the last 3 years and chronic pain for the last ten. Ive been in the business for 2 weeks now and it has been moving fast, and enjoying the product. I get out more, I talk more. I could go on but i wont,one has to find out for them selves everything really is here-say. This guy here who writes in negative terms prolly is a pessimist, getting paid for this.. really its all here-say. No true facts no studies and Likely enough this guy doesn't have degree in nutrition to back himself up nor has any proof to claim this is a scam. All here-say.. Might want to try a bottle out yourself, you probably could get a free one yourself! do some more study on your own about nutrition learn something useful. perhaps that bottle will change yer life and you wont be so negative. Maybe you'll learn something about your self you never new about.. maybe take a shot listen to some reggae and dont sweat the small stuff.. There is way to much to worry about in our lives, how about pollution and what your doing to contribute to polluting the air. . Go buy some more McDonald's and contribute in bad health and make more money for the McDonald's franchise chains. Better to give them bigger pockets and tear your health down then to be open and study nutrition and contribute in a healthier lifestyle and even have more time and money.... and just think, you'll be more positive and healthier! My good friend gave me the "30-minute, industry-fed speech" just the other day and frankly I was not impressed. I felt like she was reading out of a book. No independent research, just: "buy this from me"... Mind you, Here is a woman who is probably 40 pounds over weight, and never excercises or eats a balanced diet. She lives on junk food and so does her husband and children.
She also routinely criticizes me for being "too focused on the way I look" because I work out daily, eat right and expect the same from my kids. Now REALLY, do you think that this friend of mine is a likely salesperson for this magic juice? All I wanted to say is, "GET OFF YOUR LAZY ASS AND GO FOR A JOG! EAT AN APPLE!" I was so irritated that I could not wait to hang up the phone! Who is she to tell me how to be healthy?!? I am sorry, but this sceme is like some fat guy going door to door selling workout equipment that he "Swears By"... Joke.
Now, to make matters worse, I am terrified to make plans with her or go over to her house for fear of her thrusting this juice down my throat!
(Honestly, if we are giving this stuff to our kids in replace of teaching them to eat a balanced diet, full of fruits and vegetables...then what are they really learning?)
Obesity is REAL, and learning that mommy and daddy can stay in tip-top health by drinking a glass of this over-priced juice, while they sit their butts on the couch and eat twinkies is a disaster waiting to happen.
It is also interesting to see what these pyramid sales people say when they are asked: "If this stuff is sooo great, then why dont the manufacturors sell it in the stores? A swanky health food shop could easily sell a $40 bottle of miracle juice, if it had the right marketing plan." - Her response: "They make way more money through their distributors and their networking."

Hello, I'm a MonaVie distributor. For a few months, I thought that the business was too hard and I was just wasting my money. I figured it was a scam. Right when I was about to quit, someone in my downline discovered Team. Team is a leadership organization that has created a system for MonaVie distributors to use that has made my business flourish. Seeing the incredible success I've had after using the Team system, I now believe MonaVie is the exact opposite of a scam and I know ANYONE can do it. Information, leads to actions, and actions lead to results. If you don't have the right information, you will have poor results. If you have the right information, you're going to get great results, just like I have with Team. You CAN be successful with your MonaVie business; you've just got to have the right information! Monavie is the best thing that has happened to me and my family! Your crazy if you think that it is a scam because it definitely is not!!! Obviously your just too egotistic to open up your mind and admit that this stuff really does work, and the business side of it is amazing! I was very unsure of this product at first. I knew nothing about it, but I did know the people that invited me were upstanding and trustworthy. I would like to say a few things about the group of people I work with. My "upline" has nothing but the best intentions for anyone they work with. If you go onto the MonaVie website, you will see, the money is a bonus but it is NOT the MAIN reason we do what we do. Health in this day in age is very important. We care about the health of those around us. Many people take vitamins to give the building blocks for a good life. Many of us take pills for our join health and I know I have taken things like immune boosting tablets (which are a combo of vitamins) when others around me are sick. Well Mona Vie is juice. Juice that comes from fruits, fruits that have vitamins. So the name calling of those that drink a more natural source of the vitamins is really unkind and a uncalled for. Yes the juice isn't cheap, but when you do the math, it costs less to drink the juice than to go to a coffee shop each day and coffee doesn't do anything good for your health. I know I have stopped eating a lot of the junk foods I used to. No it isn't a miracle, my body just doesn't have cravings, the juice gives my body the stuff it needs. One last thing. Mona Vie has NEVER claimed to CURE things. It is a juice and in the website it says that. Yes, it is true that the fruit that God made for us to eat does help our health in different ways. That's just like telling your kids to eat their fruits and veggies. ( Mona Vie is just really nice cause I can't afford to buy imported fruit from Brazil to get their benefits.) With proper nutrition, comes better health. I am truly sorry if anyone has had a bad experience with MonaVie, but remember something, the person may not have delivered the info correctly, but that doesn't mean that the product is bad. I pray that those that read this will come to understand that name calling and bashing a company doesn't solve anything. Agree to disagree, but keep your actions higher than name calling.

Anybody that is against this product is against making money. It is not advertised o the company can pay there distributors more. Its not in stores for th same reason. If anyone has left monavie becuase its "to hard" then it shows you were lazy, did not try to work it, and does not understand how the busines works. Its called lazyness on your end. I am the biggest critic of MLM businesses as I was once a victim of someone trying to talk me into the Quikstar/Amway crap. Although I still think Amway is still crap, I am now a believer in Monavie. My coworker tried numerous times to convince me to join and I resisted, eventually he gave me a free bottle to try and so commenced with my week long sample. I was actually surprised to be able to say that the juice gave me lots of energy and also causes the crunching in my knees to lessen by the end of the week. The comments at the start of this blog are completely inaccurate. Monavie does not claim to cure anything and is strictly forbidden by the policies to make such a claim. There are no fish products in the juice, what a stupid comment.... The grit is the pulp from the Acai berry. The juice is also not an excuse to not eat a proper diet; however, how many people can honestly say that they get their 13 servings of fruits and vegetables... I cannot admit this. 4 ounces of the juice is equal to the 13 servings, this is an amazingly convenient way to supplement your diet especially considering up to 70% of the vitamins we take as pill form come out of our rear ends and urine unprocessed. I signed up to get the juice cheaper for myself, I do feel different when I drink it! This business is not a scam, I have now built a few people into my business just by sharing my experiences and not by shoving the business idea down their throats!!

Yes, there are other Acai products but they are not processed the same and many of them make outrageous claims. There are some Mona Vie distributors making questionable claims but there are reputable scientific reports which support the health benefits of drinking it. Mona.Vie Active (the green bottle) does have glucosamine in it, however not the shellfise kind. Monavie only uses healthy plant based glucosamine.
